Egyptian Mythology Ancient Texts

Last updated:

Egyptian mythology has become a permanent part of our culture, though not quite as mainstream as Greek mythology. Nevertheless, anyone will recognize the unique stylistic renderings of Horus or Anubis, and there are plenty of modern retellings that bring these characters to the forefront. This is the Egyptian Mythology list of ancient texts.

What’s on the Egyptian Mythology Literature timeline?

First of all, this is not a timeline of all Egyptian literature. It is mostly concerned with mythology and great works of ancient literature. Great works of modern Egyptian literature are not included.

Likewise, this timeline also does not include works of pop-culture. For more on that, visit our Egyptian pop-culture page.

There are a bunch of ancient pieces to the Egyptian mythological puzzle that aren’t included here either. Much of what we know of Egyptian mythology comes from scattered pieces of papyrus, hieroglyphics written on temples and pyramids, and many other unique sources. Scholars can spend their entire lives piecing these all together, and we are not here to provide a comprehensive list. However, we did do a lot of research for this list, and have tried to provide a better list than you will find elsewhere.

If you like this timeline, please visit our Mythology hub, which has links to other mythology and literature timelines and resources.

A note on sorting dates: For complicated sorting reasons, I’ve had to list dates that exist before the common era (BCE) in a unique fashion. I’ve added “00-” to the front, then subtracted the BCE date from 5000. So 1000 BCE would actually be listed as 00-4000. This may seem unnecessarily complicated, but it was the only way I could sort it in the proper order. The BCE dates are listed in the normal way if you click on the item.
