The Well of Ascension

About The Well of Ascension

After having read Sanderson’s Mistborn, Book 1 of the Mistborn Trilogy, I was very eager to continue with Book 2, The Well of Ascension. The book is absolute proof that one can hate a book and not be able to put it down at the same time. Such was the case with me.

After the death of the supposed immortal Lord Ruler, Elend Venture, recently crowned King of Luthadel, must learn how to properly maintain order. This is not made easy as no less than three armies are waiting outside the gates. To complicate things, Elend is in love with the former street urchin Vin, now the most powerful Mistborn in the land and Elend’s protector.

Meanwhile, Vin is being stalked by a mysterious Watcher, a man who also appears to be a Mistborn. This only heightens her sense of foreboding already peaked with the awaiting armies outside their walls, and the sensation that something much bigger and more dangerous is gaining power.

This book is brilliantly written. Like its predecessor The Well of Ascension provides refreshing originality. The characters are more believable than in Mistborn. The way each character reacts to the dire situation the city is in, is plausible and allows the reader to fully immerse him/herself. Probably its greatest strength is the fact that it cannot be predicted. I can guarantee that NO ONE will be able to predict more than a chapter in this book, unless they read ahead.

Unfortunately the novel’s greatest strength lends a hand to its greatest weakness. It seems that with every twist and turn the situation worsens. As I read I would begin to expect a change for the worse every time it seemed to be looking up. Even the ending was bitter/sweet, and more bitter than sweet.

Over all The Well of Ascension was well written and will keep you glued to its pages until you finish it. My advise is, get through it because you’re going to love what comes next.
